Cubicle
Artist Statement
"Cubicle Girls' is a photographic work that depicts life inside the cubicle through the eyes of young working women in Manhattan. In this microcosmic series I focus on the robotic, caged, lifeless world inside the cubicle and how each worker decorates her work space with whimsical artifacts that represent a longing to escape. This is an exploration of women in a patriarchal society where the cubicle walls represent social rules and expectations that constrain our imagination and drain our freedom to think independently. I wonder how differently we would build these offices if it was up to us.
The girls are brightened by the lights that radiate from the monitor and the fluorescent lights surrounding them. A desire for another life is subconsciously posted on the three walls they face 50-60 hours a week.
I was a Cubicle Girl for 14 years.
